At the Think 2011 Conference Joan Lewis (P&G’s Global Consumer and Market Knowledge Officer) talked about the transformative impact of social media on traditional marketing research. Lewis ”stressed the enormous game-changing opportunities inherent with social media, and urged the industry to place learning ahead of a “dogmatic belief that representation is everything.”

Stacey Dahl writes, “Brand marketing has always been driven by one thing – sales. This is what brands ultimately want, for consumers to purchase the products or services they are offering. This is the main reason why most brands spend a lot of money on advertising and marketing campaigns.

But social media is revolutionizing how consumers interact with the brands they like. Instead of the typical passive involvement they get through traditional media, social media has given them an excellent platform for engaging with their brands in two-way conversations that are a lot more meaningful to them.”

So for entrepreneurs and small businesses, what does this mean for brand marketing?

The "White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books" documentary has secured a distribution deal and has screened across the country and in Europe! An award-winning film at the 9th Urban Mediamakers Film Festival, the director, Jonathan Gayles, Ph.D., will present this workshop. Dr. Gayles is Associate Professor of African-American Studies at Georgia State University.

This workshop will study the strategy used for the successful public and educational distribution of this documentary.

Reaching out to new customers should be the goal of every business. Having a website will open up your business to customers who rely on the internet as their major source of information. If you do not have a web presence, this new generation of online customers will be snatched up by your competitors. A web page makes it easier for people on social media sites to find and research your company. A new study Gartner research has discovered that, “a majority of today’s consumers rely to some extent on social networks to help guide them in purchase decisions.” If you don’t have a web presence, it is likely that most of these customers will not consider your business an option.

We are proud to have a member of the Urban Mediamakers Association coming back home to have an up-close conversation on pursuing your filmmaking dreams and working on major Hollywood productions. After graduating from Georgia State University's Master's program in filmmaking, Redelia left metro-Atlanta and moved to Los Angeles, California. She was accepted in the producer's program of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) in 2009. After working on the set of major studio television and film productions as a DGA Trainee, Redelia now is a union member of DGA. Her experience includes "Private Practice" - ABC Studios, "Raising the Bar" - Bochco Media, "The Office" - NBC Universal Television, "Heroes" - NBC Universal Television, "Love, BaracK" feature film - CMS Productions, "Mr. Sunshine" pilot, Sony Pictures Television, and "Tilda" pilot - HBO Productions.

Before entering the DGA producer's program, Redelia's experience included Development and Production Executive for Point 7 Entertainment, Broadcast Operations Director for Today's Shopping Network, Talent Coordinator for Triage Entertainment (Laffapalooza), Olive Beach Productions (The Gospel of MKusic with Jeff Majors), and Production Coordinator for RK/Whitecherry Productions.

Redelia received her Masters of Art in Communication from Georgia State University, and a Bachelor of Art degree in Mass Media Arts from Clark Atlanta University. Come out and chat with Redelia!

After spending the better part of 19 years promoting independent films in various film festivals and producing the nationally broadcasted BET Short Film Showcase, Ralph K. Scott has recently made his maiden voyage into the world of film-making. His company, Social Cinema is focused on exploiting films that speak to particular social issues.

Ralph's current film “Barbasol” is a father and son story that touches on Dementia. It will be used to
open discussions about mental health as well as the father and son dynamic. He deems it important to discuss these issues and begin the dialog that is well needed in the Black community.
